Featured Author James L. Hymes, Jr.

James L. Hymes, Jr. is author of this month’s book special, The Child Under Six. He had been a leader in early childhood education throughout his long career. He had been active in early childhood education since 1934 and had been directly involved in every major national initiative on behalf of young children under six and their families. His direct involvements range from the WPA Nursery Schools, to the Kaiser Child Service Centers, to the National Planning Committee for Project Head Start, and more.

He is an author, an educator, and sage commentator of many outstanding professional publications for adults and children. His clarity of thought, his commitment to basic values, his apparent love and respect for children and their families, and his fellowship with early childhood professionals made him one of the most widely read professionals in the field. His books are required reading in many early childhood education training programs.

In his very long and successful career Hymes had earned the respect and admiration of not only his colleagues but also parents and others. In 1994, the National Association for the Education of Young Children presented its very first Award for Advancing the Early Childhood Profession and Goals of NAEYC to Professor Hymes.

Of the featured book, The Child Under Six, one parent has this to say: “This is the most reassuring, kind and informative book I have ever read on parenting young children.” Indeed, Hymes shares his highly perceptive look at children’s first exciting years of discovery, adventure, and exploration. It is clear that Hymes regards children as our most valued and precious resource. His life’s work has been devoted to guiding others so that they can gain greater understanding and insight into the young child’s needs and behavior, and learn effective and appropriate ways to meet those needs and foster good growth, development and behavior.

ACKNOWLEDGENMENTS
  • Thank you, John Michael Carlevale, Jr. for setting an example and providing the impetus to build a web store.
  • Thank you, authors, for authoring the great books and CDs featured in this web store.
  • A special appreciation to Georgia Bradley (Houle) Zaborowski, who authored the first book published by us and who had the trust and faith that we could do it successfully
OUR COMPANY AND HISTORY
  • Our parent company – Tot-lot Child Care Products – was founded in 1971 to provide products and services to the early childhood education professional community.
  • In 1984 a publishing division was established to publish our first book, Learning Centers for Young Children, which remains a featured product in our web store.
  • Since its establishment, the publishing division has undergone significant change and growth. It has progressed from a very small portion of company activity to a major component.
  • Our initial publications were limited to early childhood education and child development.
  • Since then the scope of our publications has increased significantly and now includes publications in the major subject-matter-content areas. AQ substantial portion of our publications include
    • college textbooks,
    • laboratory manuals,
    • professional training workbooks.
  • As publishing diversity increased, a more generic name for our publishing endeavors seemed desirable.
  • Furthermore, some pragmatic business considerations suggested that a separate and distinct publishing entity was preferred and required.
  • With these considerations in mind, Consortium Publishing was founded as a separate company on January 1, 1990.

LIBERATING YOUNG CHILDREN FROM SEX ROLES by Phyllis Taube Greenleaf $7.99
ISBN 0-940139-01-4, 24 pages, paper
This powerful little book describes the adverse effects which sex role stereotyping has on the growth, learning, and behavior of young children. Through her own experiences in a variety of early childhood programs and careful observation of children in these various settings, the author came to an important conclusion: helping children adjust to traditional sex roles was contradictory to helping them develop their potential.

Through many concrete examples, the author makes a convincing argument for liberating young children from sex roles and clearly shows how this can free children to be all they can be in positive ways. This book offers an important philosophical and practical guide to teaching and parenting.

SHARED SPACES by Georgia Bradley Houle $14.99
ISBN 0-940139-24-3, 64 pages, paper
This book is written for those who are operating early childhood education or child care programs in facilities that are used for other programs or purposes at other times. This includes the homes of some care givers. This book emerged from the author’s own experience in working with young children in both home based and center based settings, and from informal conversations and formal conferences with child care professionals who sought the author’s help to reconcile the many problems that emerge when space is shared. From these experiences evolved the many practical and creative solutions, which is the content of this book. The Preface of the book describes the basic premise and the general solution to problems, which emerge when space is shared. The individual chapters address specific solutions to specific problems within a particular setting. Hence, the content of Shared Spaces is divided into two major parts. Part One covers the special concerns and solutions for home based care. Part Two addresses problems and solutions for center based care. Nevertheless, professionals in each setting may benefit from the content and solutions described in the other. These solutions are not only described but also clearly illustrated. Consequently, the reader can actually visualize how a given solution might be applied in a particular setting and how that solution might also be modified in order to be “tailored” to program and user needs. Indeed, each picture is worth a thousand words in this problem-solving book. Chapters

EFFECTIVE WRITING FOR THE BUSINESS WORLD by Thelma D. Kantorowitz-Shafer $19.99
ISBN 0-940139-29-4, 340 pages, paper
This book represents the best efforts of the authors’ combined years of teaching writing at the Community College of Rhode Island. In their classes students are led step-by-step through the process of writing effectively for the business world. The goal has been to prepare successful business communicators. This goal is reflected in the book’s organization and style. Effective Writing for the Business World is practical, clearly written, and well organized. Nine complete chapters are devoted to letter writing. Too many books use too many pages to discuss formal report writing, visual design, library research, or basic composition. Too many books are too theoretical and often stale. Every chapter of this book uses examples to make discussions clear, checklists to review major points covered, and a generous number of exercises to test understanding. These exercises have been developed and used successfully in classrooms. For those teachers who teach the formal written report, there are two chapters. Chapter 14 contains a complete sample feasibility report. Students are led step-by-step through the writing process - from assignment to format. Each report element is discussed and illustrated. SEXUAL GUIDE TO WRITTEN INTERCOURSE, FULFILLING GRAMMAR, AND SEDUCTIVE USAGE by Arnold Rabin $24.99
ISBN: 0-940139-64-2, 118 pages, paper,
This interesting and unusual approach to teaching writing, grammar and usage is the byproduct of many years of writing and the teaching of writing and the author’s search for a way of seducing students into the learning process and helping them find the joy of written intercourse, fulfilling grammar and seductive usage. The author acknowledges in “Foreplay” that  “only recently I have become increasingly and pleasurably conscious of how intricately involved are sex, writing, and the principles which govern good writing and how sexual analogies not only metaphorically illuminate the study of language and the writing process but, indeed, are themselves intrinsic to them.

LIBERATING YOUNG CHILDREN FROM SEX ROLES, by Phyllis Taube Greenleaf $7.99

They are ready, however, to learn how their feelings can help them make decisions about sharing their bodies, and how to communicate those decisions to others. This kind of learning serves as a vital first step in the protection of children from sexual abuse. TWENTIETH CENTURY MUSIC: AN INTRODUCTION, Second Edition by Lloyd Kaplan, with Nancy Carroll, $18.99
ISBN 0-940139-21-9, 86 pages, paper
All too often textbooks are too extensive and technical in coverage and impede learning rather than facilitate it. This text is streamlined to the needs of students who are 1.) music majors in their first or second year of college, or 2.) non-majors electing to take a course in twentieth century music. Consequently, the language of this book is direct and concise, and only a few musical examples are utilized so as to not frustrate those students who have not yet learned the technical aspects of music. This book is simply intended to provide a basic introduction, via intellectual concepts, to the important artistic movements that either dominated or significantly affected the music of the twentieth century.
WHO’S WHO IN R.I. JAZZ: c. 1925—1988 by Lloyd Kaplan and Robert E. Petteruti $19.99
ISBN 0-940139-26-X, 102 pages, paper
This biographical work pays tribute to the numerous performers who have contributed to jazz in Rhode Island. Along with the biographies of the musicians, which comprise the main body of the text, there is an overview of the jazz scene, which puts the history of Rhode Island jazz into perspective. It calls attention to such aspects as jazz styles, the jazz clubs scene, and important people, other than performers, whose contributions have enhanced the jazz climate of Rhode Island. Also included are some brief essays of especially prominent individuals and a selection of historically significant photographs that will have especially great sentimental value to those who have loved and enjoyed jazz in Rhode Island and elsewhere, since many of the individuals included in this work have earned national and international recognition.
